Pickleball is a game of momentum. When you lose 5 points in a row, it’s not your paddle’s fault. It’s your brain. Here is how to fix it.

Player focusing during a match

The "Red Mist"

We have all been there. You are up 9-2. Then you miss a dink. Then your partner lobs it out. Then you get smashed. Suddenly it's 9-9. You are tight. You are angry. You are about to lose.

This is the "Red Mist." In pickleball, points happen so fast that you can lose a lead in 60 seconds if you don't have a Reset Protocol.

1. The Paddle Tap Rule

Rule: No matter what happens—ace, winner, or terrible unforced error—you must tap paddles with your partner.
  • Why? It breaks the isolation. When you miss, you feel shame. When your partner ignores you, you feel judgment. A paddle tap says, "We are still a team. Next point."
  • Do it immediately. Don't sulk first. Tap, then walk to position.

2. The "3-Second Breath"

Between points, you have about 10 seconds. Use 3 of them to breathe.

  1. 1Look at the strings of your paddle (visual reset).
  2. 2Inhale through your nose (4 count).
  3. 3Exhale through your mouth (4 count).

This lowers your heart rate. High heart rate = Panic decisions. Low heart rate = Smart pickleball.

3. "One Job Only"

When you are spiraling, your brain tries to fix everything at once. "I need to hit harder, and spin more, and cover the line..."

Stop. Give yourself One Job.

  • "Just make the return."
  • "Just hit to the backhand."
  • "Just watch the ball."

Simplifying your focus quiets the noise.

4. Call a Time-Out

You have them. Use them! If the opponents score 3 points in a row, call a time-out. You don't even need to talk strategy. Just drink water. Walk around. Break their rhythm. I have seen more matches won by a well-timed time-out than by any ATP or Erne.

Important
Be a Goldfish.
Ted Lasso was right. A goldfish has a 10-second memory. In pickleball, the last point does not matter. The only thing that matters is the ball in your hand right now.
