"We laughed at him," says Captain Miller. "We thought it was a sport for our grandparents."

"In a fire, I need to know my partner has my back," Miller explains. "On the court, it's the same thing. You communicate. 'Mine!' 'Yours!' 'Switch!' It builds a non-verbal bond that translates to the job."

3. Stress Relief

The job is heavy. Dealing with trauma takes a toll. "For 15 minutes, we aren't thinking about the car wreck we just saw," says Sparks. "We are just thinking about beating B-Shift."

The Station 42 Rules

The crew developed their own house rules:

1. 1The "Boot" Faul: It you hit the ball into a turnout boot, you lose a point.
2. 2The Alarm Rule: If the alarm rings mid-point, whoever was winning the point claims victory.
